DORA THE FAIRY
Far, far away in a valley surrounded by purple mountains as far as the eye can see there lives a family of fairies. They are the most magical fairies and the ones who come into our dreams at night while we are sleeping and grant those secret wishes we hope for and are amazed by when they come true. These fairies live in small cottages within a small village. Lira is the most powerful fairy of them all. She grants the really big wishes that are a little too difficult for the other fairies to handle. Except for maybe Dora. Dora is the next most powerful fairy. Right now she is flying around near the village with Regan and Polly.
“What are you saying?” Regan asks, buzzing along beside the other two. “Are you saying your fairy magic is more powerful than Lira's?”
“No,” Dora replies. “I just want to handle bigger wishes than the ones I do now. These wishes are not much of a challenge for me, that is all.”
“Wow!” Polly says. “I cannot imagine what it would be like to handle any wishes larger than the ones I am handling right now! That would be....well, overwhelming!”
The three of them touch down underneath a row of sunflowers to rest, their wings needing a little break.
“How long have you been feeling this way Dora?” Polly asks.
“Well, for a little while,” Dora says, shifting underneath one of the sunflowers. “Maybe a month or so,” Dora adds, stretching her arms and wings.
“Have you tried talking with Lira about receiving more difficult wishes to attend to?” asks
Polly.
“I think that would be a wonderful idea to do as Polly suggests,” says Regan.
“Well, I do not know what to do exactly,” Dora says, leaning against a stem in the shade. “Maybe I should talk to her! It does not have to be a challenge. After all, maybe my magic is more powerful than Lira's.”
Dora takes off into the air again with the other two following behind her. In just a little while she begins to have trouble with her flying. First she stutters a little here with her flying and then she stutters a little there. Then suddenly, Dora feels panicked and begins to fall! Regan swoops down just in time to catch Dora before she falls to the ground. It was not a far fall and she would have been okay but it still was not fun for her to go through.
“Thanks Regan!” Dora says to her friend, shocked.
“You are welcome Dora,” Regan replies, setting Dora on her feet.
Polly lands next to the other two.
“What happened?” she asks, tucking her wings behind her.
“I do not know!” Dora replies. “Suddenly I just could not fly!”
The three of them return to the village. The other fairies are confused at seeing Regan carrying Dora when they touch down. Dora walks inside her cottage. Regan and Polly follow.
“Are you okay?” Polly asks Dora.
“I think so,” Dora answers. She tries to levitate her cup over to her hand. Nothing happens.
“Wow!” says Regan. “What is going on?”
“I...I do not know,”Dora says, astonished.
Dora tries to make her flowers in her windowsill bloom. They are becoming a little droopy. Again, nothing happens. Then, all of a sudden, Lira's image appears in the air in front of them all.
“Hello, my fellow fairies,” Lira says.
“Hello Lira!” they return.
“Lira? Dora cannot seem to.....,” Regan begins but Lira gently shushes him.
“I know, Regan, my dear friend.” Lira says. “Dora is learning a lesson.”
Regan and Polly look at Lira with wide eyes.
“What kind of lesson Lira if I may ask?” says Polly.
“That is for Dora to learn,” Lira replies to Polly with a gentle smile.
“What have I done wrong Fairy Mother?” Dora asks, wings droopy, concern on her face.
“You have begun displaying selfish pride, young Dora,” Lira replies, looking lovingly at Dora. “You are building an unhealthy amount of pride in yourself due to the power of your fairy magic.”
“I am sorry, Fairy Mother.....,” Dora begins.
“Therefore, for your own good sweet Dora, I am taking your magic away for one week,” Lira says. “At that time, if you are back to a healthy state with yourself Dora, and your aura is healthy and strong your magic will be returned to you. Dora, we fairies must be pure and peaceful. Gentle and true. This is a lesson out of love, to help you grow and become the great fairy that you are destined to become. That is all my children.”
Lira's image slowly fades from sight.
The three fairies stand in silence for a moment. Dora is dazed. Confused.
“What are you going to do?” Regan asks Dora, slowly embracing her in a hug.
“I suppose there is only one thing that she can do,” Polly says.
“Polly is right,” says Dora. “I will do as Mother Lira says and I will restore myself. I must make amends for my selfish pride.”
“We can help you do it!” Regan exclaims.
“That is right!” Polly agrees. “We will do it together!”
That week the three fairies worked very hard, especially Dora. Dora went around the village to every other fairy and apologized to them if she had been selfish or arrogant towards them. She had been bragging to others about how much more powerful her magic was compared to theirs, belittling them. She had developed quite a reputation. It took a while but by the end of the week Dora had made amends with all of the other fairies in the village. Now she wanted to see if anything would happen. If Lira would give her back her fairy magic. She hoped that Lira would. She truly did feel badly about the way she had behaved before.
For most of the day the three fairy friends hung around each other. Dora tried different things to see if she had magic again. She tried to fly but found that she still could not. It was getting late in the day now and Dora was sad again.
“I do not think that I am going to get my magic back you two,” she says to Regan and Polly. “Maybe I do not deserve to.”
“There there,” Regan says, holding Dora close. “It is not yet the end of the day.”
“Regan is right,” Polly says. “We still have time.”
The three watched as the sun began sinking and most of the other fairies went inside their cottages for the night. Then, all of a sudden Lira's face appeared again!
“You have done well Dora,” Lira says, smiling. “The two of you as well, with helping Dora,” Lira says looking over at Polly and Regan.
“Thank you Fairy Mother,” Regan and Polly say.
“Yes, thank you Fairy Mother,” Dora adds. “I am sorry for my behavior.”
“I believe you are, sweet Dora and I am restoring your magic,” Lira says, smiling at Dora.
Suddenly there was a bright flash and Dora had a golden aura about her for a few moments, her magic restored. The flash aroused many other fairies who came out of their cottages to see Dora glowing and the Mother Fairy's image in the air.
“Dora! Mother Lira has restored your magic!” Glennen yells, running towards her.
“Yes my friend!” Dora exclaims happily, embracing Glennen.
“Fairy Mother!” the other fairies cheer.
Lira's image slowly fades with a smile as Polly and Regan and the rest of the fairies cheer as they dance around Dora.
