COREY CART
Corey smiled to the others as the young woman pulled him free from the row of other shopping carts that he was attached to. The other shopping carts smiled back at Corey and cheered as the woman pushed him towards the shopping aisles of the grocery store. Corey beamed proudly at the fellow carts as he and the woman passed them on the way to beginning their adventure. The other carts beamed back at Corey as well as they were all very happy to perform their services for the shoppers. It made the shopping carts happy to be useful in the peoples' needs.
Cheerful music played from above throughout the grocery store as the people wheeled their carts around the store acquiring their needed items. Corey particularly liked visiting the bakery department inside the store and kept hoping that the young woman would eventually make her way there to buy some cookies perhaps or possibly even a delicious pie! So far Corey and the woman had been to the produce department and the pharmacy. Presently they were working their way up one of the main aisles of the store. During his adventures with the shoppers Corey had noticed that some shoppers differ from others. On the one hand, Corey had learned some shoppers darted all over the store during their shopping. They seemed to know exactly what they were looking for within the store and proceeded to just those items. On the other hand, Corey observed, other shoppers (such as this shopper) preferred to go up each and every aisle of the store. Corey personally preferred this kind of shopper and was happy this woman was this kind of shopper because he liked to help people and he enjoyed roaming around the store, seeing the people and exercising his wheels. It felt good to be mobile.
Corey sighed happily with accomplishment as they proceeded to the checkout lanes, nodding at his fellow shopping cart friends. He glanced around the store as the young woman pushed towards a checkout lane that she had chosen. He smiled as the woman dropped a candy bar into his basket as
they waited in line for their turn to check out. Corey enjoyed the smell of chocolate. It was his second favorite smell after the smells in the bakery. He always wondered if these wonderful smells tasted as good as they smelled and wished that he required sustenance. As the young woman removed the items she had chosen to purchase from his basket and placed them on the conveyor belt Corey felt the relief of the weight being removed. He always enjoyed the work but it did feel good to have the weight unloaded after a shopping trip too! Especially if the shopping trip were a heavy load.
The woman and checker conversed as the items were scanned at the register. Corey could not understand their conversation but he could tell by the tones and expressions that it was a pleasant one. The woman had even said something pleasant to the sacker apparently as she had smiled at the woman as well while she bagged the groceries. This made Corey happy and he felt fondly of the woman for being so considerate to the grocery store employees as he considered them to be his friends.
After finishing with their conversations and the young woman receiving her receipt for her purchases Corey and the woman made their way past fellow shoppers and fellow shopping carts. They proceeded through the automatic doors of the grocery store and out into the parking lot, being careful of traffic. As the young woman pushed Corey to her vehicle Corey noticed that a storm was approaching. It was already beginning to rain a little and Corey could tell that the woman was in a hurry to unload her groceries into her vehicle. Lightning flashed in the distance and thunder rumbled. Corey noticed that the shopping cart attendant was pushing shopping carts that he had collected from the parking lot stalls into the store. Corey looked around the parking lot as best he could as the woman continued unloading her groceries from his basket. He could not see much around the parking lot because of the vast size of the parking lot and the vehicles parked within it that were obstructing his vision but he could see that all of the stalls that he could see in the lot were empty.
With the weight released from his basket Corey knew that he was now empty as well. The rain was beginning to fall harder now. The lightning was flashing and the thunder was rumbling. Corey knew that the storm was getting closer.
'Oh no!' thought Corey. He hoped that the young woman would wheel him back inside the store to his shopping cart friends. 'Please take me inside!' he thought as hard as he could, hoping she would turn towards the store. For a moment he thought that she might but his heart sank as the woman hurriedly pushed him towards and into the empty shopping cart stall a little ways across and up from her vehicle. 'No!' Corey screamed to himself. 'Please! Please take me inside!' The woman left Corey in the stall alone and hurried back to her vehicle. 'Help!' Corey thought. 'Somebody come get me!' The woman backed out of her parking spot and drove away. The rain fell harder and the wind blew. Corey flinched as the lightning flashed more quickly now and the thunder boomed overhead. He cried to himself inside the cart stall, outside in the storm and all alone.
Corey shivered in the cold rain, the wind hitting him harder as the storm loomed closer. He found the lightning flashes to be very scary. 'I am metal,' Corey thought to himself as he eyed the lightning. 'I hope I do not get struck!' He shivered and sniffled in the cold.
“Is that all of them!” he suddenly heard someone shouting. He could not turn around in the stall to see who was calling out but he could hear rattling sounds.
“There is one more in that stall over there!” someone else shouted. “I found a few stragglers in the back as well!”
“Let's get them inside!” the other voice replied.
Suddenly Corey felt a jerking sensation and then he was moving backwards.
“I hope my car windows are up!” whomever was behind him was saying to the other person.
Corey found himself being attached to a line of fellow shopping carts. Suddenly they were being pushed to the store's entrance.
“I bet you do!” the other voice called out as they moved toward the entrance doors.
Inside the store the other shopping carts cheered as Corey and the other carts were being pushed inside, out of the storm. Corey smiled at his fellow cart friends, water dripping down from himself and the others who had been outside with him.
“Corey!” Charles Cart said to him as he and the other shopping carts were being dried off.
“Hello Charles!” Corey returned with a smile.
“Pretty scary out there, eh?” Charles said, glancing over at Corey as the cloth was drying him off.
“Yes! Yes it was!” Corey replied. “I thought I was all alone out there! I thought I was going to be left outside in that storm by myself!”
“Not at all!” Charles chuckled with a smile, happy to be dry. “We are never alone in this world Corey,” Charles continued, “there are always plenty who care about us.”
Corey and Charles smiled at each other as the cloth began drying off Corey.
