The Champion
Through the cold, dark nights of many moons.
Through the days of the harsh, angry sun
he travels the lands where he is needed
to face the horrors from which others run.
He has faced demons,
slain monsters,
dragons and giants
bringing the innocent such pain, often death.
His mission, the champion to all in need of his aid
shall he provide until his very last breath.
Oh the princesses he has loved throughout all of his trials!
The damsels he has rescued as he has traveled these ways.
But alas, though so lonely his calling demands
he must journey on despite his heart wishing to stay.
And so he ventures again through those cold, lonely nights.
And he sheds many tears while cussing the cruel, hot sun.
And he conquers the monster that is waiting ahead.
Just as one is vanquished by sword another has only begun.
The mighty hero!
The champion!
How he is an empty shell deep inside.
Lonely for love that he shall never know.
His calling never allowing him a chance to decide.

So very sad. But I love the reading of it. Made me think of a Super Hero,, but I see your point that because they are such heroes, they lose out when it comes to relationships.

Michael, this is crystal clear storytelling that captures the dilemma of a hero with powerful strong resonance that only a poet of your gift can bring to the poem. This reminded me of the movie "Return of Superman" in a way because in this movie Superman has to give up Lois Lane who has found another man in his absence while gone to Krypton to seek the fate of his people. He also has to give up the son he had with Lois because she has a husband. Truly deep and rolling poetry here my friend that rocketed me into the inner space of a hero.
