Sitka Eagle Sanctuary
Old man in feather shawl Bleary eyed in golden years But sacred heart a fiery torch That burns bright as a vision Of his lake of heaven Where he climbed the mirrored sky Into the Alaskan sun orb flames Whose grail held the secret hunger For a bird of appetite
But the arrow of human passion pierced him Into a broken wing of desire No more to sail the blue lit sphere Of the heights of rapture Head cocked like a sly seraph On his earthbound perch Like Hamlet Haunted by the ghost Of father sky

Michael, I am most joyful that this left such an impression on you. We were at a rescue center for wounded raptors and saw this old eagle in his forest sanctuary. He was 37 years old, the oldest documented eagle recorded. And he couldn't fly anymore but cocked his head looking at us like he was curious. So this poem is about him and what it must feel like to be him. Super glad you enjoyed my friend. You made my day and then some.

Birds should be free to fly, I will not have another bird in a cage. We used to have a cockatoo named Charlie, he was like a two year old. He sat on our laps, loved his head being stroked. He sat on my broom when I swept up. He had the run of our home and only went into his cage when we were not at home, we had high ceilings. Charlie said a lot of words and loved dancing. When we moved to Queensland I found him a new owner as I was worried he wouldn’t survive the trip. Now I see cockatoos flying about, we have a lot of bird life in forest lake and I watch them most days. I would never want to own one in a cage again.

Your story of how you let your cockatoo fly free is heartwarming. Indeed birds should fly free. This eagle was wounded and cannot fly. So his only hope for survival is in this sanctuary where they take care of him. He and I made eye contact during our visit. He kept cocking his head in a quizzical manner as though he was curious about us. Your Charlie sounded like a wonderful companion. He must have made your home very happy. Love hearing about him, my friend. Thank you again for blessing my poem with your thoughts and feelings.

So sad for a proud eagle to lose his freedom to roam the skies.

The eagle made eye contact with me several times. And I feel we made a connection. Though he is well taken care of I am sure he would prefer to roam the skies again. Thank you so much for reading me here and really feeling for this bird as I did.
