Leftovers
Everyone feels the need to talk
to fill in the quietness.
Voices straining over the tablecloth
loudly to be heard,
having nothing much to say.
I’m meditating in the glow
of the salt and pepper shakers
as the crispness of the dinner rolls
stale.
Another tiresome evening
to overrate, routine stories, fake smiles
and cracked foundations.
Searching for a flavour
that has passed it’s used by date.
Hoping to gain some
seasoning for the future.
The serviettes laid out in wait
of the few left over crumbs
that cling like the past.

A very sad poem indeed. One can hear the pain of having long lost the relationship in every line but still attempting yet another stab at revival.

Yeah. It's exactly like that too. I took this in hard with my own situation that I have mentioned on here. It's a sad write but done so damn well my friend.

Sugar, this is a perfectly nuanced poem on how some relationships change whether for better or worse and some stay the same whether stale or fresh. Love every phrasing here and how it captures the meaning of sadness so exquisitely. Truly a poem that I will remember in my heart.

Sometimes that's the way it goes..you find you've just outgrown certain people, relationships, life happens..& takes you elsewhere.

Thank you sky, there are people in your life that no matter how much time lapses you are still connected, others leave you wondering what it was that started the friendship. I guess when you’re young anyone is your mate, as you get older and wiser it changes.
