Hollow
Metallic faces float throughout the air in front of you.
Sometimes in the daytime, other times during the night.
Sometimes leaving you with a warm feeling.
Other times leaving you feeling cold and hard.
You are in a chair at your dining room table
though somehow you have never been here before.
You look up from your plate,
eyes hollow, metallic.
Once, before the hollow times
you knew play.
Now an itch remains and though you scratch and scratch
it just will not go away.
So you sit in meditation
and you see faces made of flesh.
The faces talk to you and guide you.
Afterwards, when you look in a mirror
your eyes are not hollow anymore.
But time does not always allow for meditation
so you slowly ebb back,
back to reality.
Back to hollow and metallic.
Hollow eyes hold hollow lies within surprise.
You are a collector
while also being one of the collected.
You could meet your person
if you could turn back the hands of time.
Sometimes we all find ourselves seeing metallic faces.

I’ve actually seen floating faces when I’m not grounded I am woken up by sounds and voices that only I hear. I understand this on a personal level. I have related it to my own experiences

Michael, I always love how you create surreal scenes and people and give them a subtle but profound self-reflection. This reminds me of the Bob Dylan song, "Not Dark Yet." Humanity slowly slides into the abyss but pretends our culture was not in dire straits. I read the headlines of the college paper today saying conservatives were trying to bring racism and other bigotry back into the norm. Such sad times we live in.

Thank you both for the reads and this is one of those poems that everyone can relate to in their own way and perhaps make connections in other ways too. Kind of a metaphorical type thing. Glad you both enjoyed and got something out of it. And yes, John, I totally agree, sad times for sure. I don't know what the hell is going on with our society anymore. Total collapse

So eloquently depressing which one cannot fail to recognize, expertly penned.
