I find that I need alone time with my own thoughts to be able to write poetry - or much of anything else original for that matter.
It's no small wonder to me that I wrote my first poem in nearly a year while walking a little more than two miles alone on a pleasant Autumn afternoon.
The vast majority of my poetry was written while I was on third shift for nearly 20 years. Those quiet times in the wee hours when nothing was broken or planned were perfect for it.
First shift in a riled up pandemic era is just way too much noise for an artistic soul to see the precious things in life through a time of inner reflection that has no time to exist.
That and this little chatterbox in its hip holster is both a blessing and a curse. I wish we were still only using laptops and desktops sometimes.
How is everyone?
Dan

Sorry to hear you're stalled Dan. I've been stalled with writing too for reasons I've gone into elsewhere. It took a tragic event to get me to write another sonnet, the only thing I've written in a very long time other than a story I am half-heartedly pecking at. I found another outlet for my creative venting though through painting. It's therapeutic. Getting me through some tough days. I'm not sure if I'll write again or not, I'm feeling some slight tugs toward it but painting is my focus now. Maybe you can find another outlet more suited to your environment until circumstances change?

I can understand your position, Dan. When time once allowed, I was able to write some pretty good poetry. It has been some time since I have had the time to let my thoughts come out and play. Another thing that I find inspiring is being exposed to the works of others. Rick's writing was always an inspiration to me. You know something, Brian? Dan is a pretty darned good painter himself. I once commented on a piece of his painted art, and learned that even then, he did not have the time to pursue an interest in painting. It is all too bad that such talent lies hidden within, until we find the time to set it free. Hopefully, the day will soon come when you are both able to break the chains that bind you, and you are free to fly and chase your dreams, wherever and whatever they may be.

Thank you both Brian & QF. I hope both of you find your muses and the time to hear their whispers.
I have an extremely full schedule due to work, school, and being married. There's very little personal time in that mix. Such is the lot of a near-sixty person transitioning into a career in IT and cyber security. The list of certificates emploers want to see is endless, and they want you to train on your time, not theirs.

Thanks Foxy.
I get that Dan. I wonder some days if now being disabled has become more of a blessing than a curse. Kids are grown, marriage is rock solid even if we are falling apart together. I don't miss the insane demands the workforce is throwing out at us these days. I turned sixty this year and have to admit that every life has its challenges. I just never thought at this age mine would be what they are. I do like the old line from the Stone, You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you can get what you need. It's a little strange how priorities shift as life progresses.

Dan, I would like to see some of your paintings. I find when I paint the world becomes background noise that fades away unless something jarring happens. My cat is the exception. He likes to mew at me while he was either sleeps beside me or watches what I'm doing. Do you ever have anything like that when you're working?

He likes to mew at me while he was either sleeps beside me or watches what I'm doing. Do you ever have anything like that when you're working? I'm more of a drawer than painter. My favorite medium is colored pencil and colored ink. Occasionally I will do mixed-media pieces using model car enamels with colored pencil, which has fantastic versatility. It's been quite awhile since I've had time to do any drawing or painting, but I'm hoping for a shift next year. I'll take a look and see if I have any poetry on the board that features some of my artwork, Brian. I can't use graphics when on this site from my smartphone, which is really limiting. I do 90% of my personal time online from my phone. Meanwhile, time for me to go get settled in at work. Dan

Oh my goodness, but I love you guys. Dan, I don't remember what the art piece was that you posted with a poem, but I remember how impressed I was with it, and I do remember it was a sketch. I just remember a talent shining through. It's too bad most of your communication is by phone. I have not yet learned to work with graphics on my phone. I love my big ole desk top computer and I love my laptop/tablet that will go anywhere and do everything my desktop will do. I am totally lost without the use of graphics. That is where my big interest lies. Just remember my dear friends, in our Magical Castle of Fantasy and Fun....we are all Forever Young. Have a magical day.

A small example of my art can be found in this poem on my personal poetry blog entitled "The Pearl of Sorrow." I'm looking for another specifically. grymwyre.blogspot.com/2020/10/the-pearl-of-sorrow.html
