books
when seeking an escape from the turmoil's of the day I tend to seek refuge in books thriller and intrigue are my usual genre of choice but far from calming they make my heart race turning page after page seeking what happens next I find I've fallen prey to the page turning hex held firmly in its grasp the words start to blur still the pages I turn and finally give rest thinking now's a good place to stop as my breathing slows my heart beat slows too I wonder how long 'til before I finish and what I'll read next

Don, I think you just published the anguished thoughts of every avid reader. I love to read. Wish I had more time for it.

I still have books I bought in the 70's. I have hundreds of books. And I read them more than once - after a decent period of time has gone by so that it is like reading them like new again. I am persently on my second reading of a trilogy of Anne Rice - The Witching Hour, Lasher, and Taltos. I have less than a hundred pages left of the last book Taltos. This series i last read when I bought them in the 90's so it is like reading it all over again. As soon as I finish one book, I have to start another one immediately. My next book will probably be one of Phillipa Gregory's. She is a great historical fiction writer. Or maybe I might go for one of Max Haines's short write-ups of true crime, or maybe one of Stephen King's horrors. As soon as I finish a book I go into the guest bedroom where I keep my bookcases and go through them and see what strikes me at the moment.
And yes, if I see a book in the bookstore that interests me - I will buy it.

I have to admit I do miss reading books for enjoyment. These days it's only for study & that when I can squeak it in around everything else. I'm kind of playing hooky just to stop in and visit here tonight. Great wright, Bear.

I miss reading however I'm not able to read for long or track a story over several days. .
I still have some of my old books, others I gave to my son. I may not be able to pick them up anymore, but they cannot be sent for recycling either. It's important I think to keep and respect them, especially my old history books. Our history is being forgotten and rewritten. Like Dan said, in different words, this is not a good thing.

I have always loved reading, and expect to do a lot of that in retirement. Great poem.
