Reality Persists
Her hope within this flower
given to her years before,
pressed and placed inside a book
she lifts from a dresser drawer.
Her fingers trace the edges,
stinging tears and biting smile.
Each day living reality
her heart lives in denial.
Inside her head.....
Inside her head.....
such echoes day and night.
“You must move on!
You must move on!
It is time to see the light.
It has been five years.
You must move on!
No! He will be home any day! Mommy, when will daddy be home?
Mommy, what is MIA?”
Her hope within this flower
given many years before
she held close to her heart
as they walked along the shore.
The sun was orange and setting.
Purple clouds high in the sky.
This fragrant flower, the splashing waves,
the laughter in his eyes!
Her hope within this flower
she now touches with a kiss.
“You must move on!
You must move on!
Mommy, where is daddy?
Mommy, what is MIA?”
Reality persists.

An all too real poem, Mike ... written with empathy and style.

Physically here or not, some people never leave our hearts.

Michael, letting go can be so hard. Your poem really stricks a chord with those who have lost a loved one through war or other realities. You, my friend, write such heartfelt poems it would be impossible not to feel them deeply.

These useless wars take our best and brightest men and women.. Your poem put me in this little girl’s heart to feel her denial as she gazes upon the flower which to her is a promise of his return. But reality persists. This poem gave me the rare opportunity to see with stark vividness a child’s experience of MIA. John

War is so sad and in most cases, unnecessary. They just need to send the opposing leaders into the arena to fight their own duel. Only one life is lost and very little money spent .... and the world goes on, untouched.

Bows deeply.
Memories sleep so light a sleep and time passes by.
It is not the mind but the body that matters most to many
forgetting that in reality we live in our thoughts.
