this one's inspired by my new avatar lol
susan
i can just picture grandma as a young girl trying to learn the new fangled invention that of the sewing machine
grandma would sit there with her bonnet and her matching dress a must for those days for girls weren't supposed to show their heads in some cultures it's still forbidden
grandma and her sewing machine, what's she making i wonder, another dress, would it be her best to wear to special occasions i'd like to know
grandma and her sewing machine, she's mending now, her work is helping mama, while she tends to the little ones a girl's work back then to was never done
grandma and her sewing machine see how fast her foot goes on that petal, it goes, and goes as she gets out her woes
grandma and her sewing machine i still have it, but, she's no longer there, but i i wish she was
Susan ps, my sister has my grandmother's sewing machine, like that, it sat in the basement of the house we sold, for many years, although baba didn't have it as a young child, but i'm sure many others did
and she also has her husband's grandmother's as well...

Susan, I learned to sew on an old Singer Treadle Sewing Machine when I was just a little girl. I used to make doll clothes, graduated to making my own clothes. worked as a dress maker for years. This brings back memories.

Such a wonderful poem, Susan. Life was so different in the youthful days of your grandmother, in many ways better I think.

it's not a true story, she did have the machine yes, but she didn't get it until she was an adult...
but thank you, yes, it was better for some parts, but not in alot of parts...
but that's how it was for all our grandmother's and as foxy says, even she used that machine, learnt on it.....

Those old sewing machines, most of which I remember to be Singer Brand, were passed down for generations. Mine was one of those. From my grandmother to my mother and finally to me. I was the only one of the KDS who had an interest in it. It was awhile before I could afford an electric one. As long as the old treadle machine worked and made good stitches, I was happy with it. The time finally comes when you have to update.

I learned to sew taking Home Ec I believe it was called in middle school...was required to take as was Foods as well. I got a C in Home Ec...my final project was sewing a dog pillow, not like for a dog but a pillow that was a dog..I got a C on it..didn't put near enough stuffing in it and it also fell apart when I put it in the washing machine once...been a long time since I last sewed. I liked Foods a lot better, made a big 'ol fire one time cooking sumpin the teacher like literally ran across the class room to put it out on the stove I was using that my group worked with...was cool..fun....was an awesome fire ah, the memories...I think I may have gotten a C in there too but it was fun...maybe the C had something to do with the fire, who knows.

Yep!! I took Home Ec, too and I loved every minute of it. I dearly loved to cook and sew. While I was still a little girl, my siblings preferred my cooking over my Mom's. Therefore, I cooked most of the family meals. I loved doing that. I'm sure my Mom enjoyed the break it gave her. I never had to wash dishes, which I hated.
