I tell you I do not want you but you laugh at me in spite. You call me every morning. Sometimes you awaken me at night and though I try to resist you I eventually give in to your ways afterwords feeling like a fool as on many other days.
You used to be my best friend. You helped make everything so clear. Whenever I had problems you helped make them disappear. But now you have turned against me. You have taken away from me....my life and nothing matters more to me than my children and my wife.
I can hardly stand to hold you as I bring you to my lips. My fingers grip your smooth body as I drink your final sips and as your poison flows within me you warm me to the bone. Yet now that you are empty I am once again alone.

This is so very potent emotionally, Mike; you have eloquently stated the power drinking has over so many people.

I wonder how many have felt the sting of those words when they have lost everything that matters? So very sad, Michael.

Thanks all...this is actually an oldie I had published in Intrepid Magazine. I wrote this probably about 20 years ago I'm estimating. Sadly the motivation for lack of better word was my step-father at the time. Hell of a nice guy but could not stop drinking. Wasn't violent to our mother or anything, very nice guy, he just couldn't stop. His alcoholism also ended up bankrupting the billboard sign family business we had at the time that he started. Very talented man, with drawing, painting, etc. and again very nice man. Is sad. Last I knew about him from our mother before she passed was that she had heard from him, he was living in New Mexico. No idea whether he is still alive or not..I would hazard a guess that probably not and i say that because of the physical tolls the drinking was taking on his body last I knew of him. Thanks for the reads, read yours in a sec!

Lost a brother and an uncle to the drowning effects of alcohol and to this day I limit myself to one drink, and no driving afterward for at least an hour.

Alcoholism is such a sad and debilitating illness.
