Drowning Man
Drowning man splashes and sinks, swallowing water,
spitting it out the best that he can,
calling out to the people gathered
who occasionally look his way from the beach.
They sit around a fire
listening to some dude playing guitar.
They play volleyball.
Drowning man shouldn't have gone out so far.
He realizes this now as he tries to keep above water.
A boat glides by fairly near.
There are people drinking aboard.
They pull a water skier,
whooping and hollering,
sometimes calling out to drowning man.
On the beach the people mostly pretend not to see or hear
but some do take pictures to post on Facebook.
Others text.
Drowning man calls out.
Everyone feigns remorse as drowning man
goes down for the last time.
Is it the last time?
He's come back up before.
They watch in anticipation.
Maybe he'll come up again.
They wait.
Another boat goes by near where drowning man was.
Everyone on board partying up a storm.
No.
He's gone.
Sadly they put their phones away.
Seems there are no more pictures to take of drowning man.

Your poem describes the way all too many people are these days, disconnected to the suffering of others .. .potent writing, Mike.

So very, very sad. I like to think that people are better than that, but too many people are caught up in their own lives to care what is happening in others'.

Everybody is watching everybody watching. I think all the pitchforks got melted down to make smartphones, and nobody carries a torch anymore. They just use their flashlight app.
Very valid point, Michael.

So sad that one can be so alone in a crowd.

Michael, don't ever feel as if you have a quota here. You don't and when your real life calls, it's like a subpoena. We must answer that call. The Castle will be here when you get back and after you have rested and recovered from whatever you had to do. Never feel pressured by the Castle.

Michael, I felt this profoundly. There is so much apathy in the world today. And I can see this scene playing out. I also felt the desperation of the drowning vividly.
