Old Songs And Karaoke...
I was told as an early teenager that I sang like a frog, Of course that crack made me jump back in the pond, Not so much as a croak for decades, Young egos are like silly putty, Soft and pliable, Unless I was alone in the car.
As a young child I loved Elvis movies, So did my brother and sister, Pretty melodies, Pretty girls, Pretty cars and boats, Wide-eyed poet child with open ears.
My childhood hero faded, We moved, Other music was everywhere, So were books, Along with pre-teen angst, That longing to fit in, Somewhere, Somehow.
Decades passed, A chance vacation with my pretty wife, An Elvis CD in a rack, And the King sang to us all the way home.
It all flooded back, That simple joy.
Soon the King rode with me to work, And back, My new voice coach, My old childhood friend.
A wayward karaoke party, Elvis in the list, So the frog hopped back out, Maybe not a prince, Maybe more than a croak, But I still love it, An old secret passion, Some right-brain splash on a left-brain world.
Those rusty old pipes still work a little, Who knew?

Totally delightful, Dan. Who didn't love Elvis and everything he represented? Hooray for that frog who jumped back out of the pond.

You "croak" all ya want dude...sure you sound just fine. My mother was of course in love with Elvis, she had a lot of his vinyls..we still have 'em here. I like a lot of Elvis myself. "In the ghetto," that's one of my favorites. Miss dancing with my mom listening to those......wow, memories. I like karaoke myself too. I'm told i sing ok....i'm a drummer really but i like to sing some too...just kinda have to know your range if you do karaoke. Cool stuff!

Michael, thank you. I have a box of Elvis vinyl as well, a gift from a friend. No turntable, however. Going to have to get one eventually. I have a really nice 90's vintage 60-watt entertainment center receiver in the garage, with the speakers mounted high in the corners. I have my PC hooked up to it right now, so I can stream or play the boatloads of MP3's I ripped from my CD collection. (I always rip at 320 kbps) It would be no big deal to cable in a decent turntable.
My range is barritone. Kind of like Elvis or Neil Diamond. My problem when I was younger was trying to sing like some of my teen music idols. Cheap Trick / Robin Zander, for instance. Way too high for my voice. Some of that classic rock I do much better if I can drop the key, particularly in a G or F.
Dylan's "Knocking On Heaven's Door" is one of my favorites, the Cowboy Junkies cover of "Sweet Jane" is another.
The biggest trick is getting time to practice.
Thank you again,
Dan

Dan, with Elvis as your voice coach how could you go wrong? You make this into an adventure which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. The circle completed from childhood angst to overcoming your self-consciousness and singing. What a grand tale.
