Thrift Store Blues
The background music is the eighties But her mind swims further upstream While her fingers sort used clothes Which she cannot afford Her manager notes she seems self-absorbed With her mind not on her work But this thrift store holds the key To her preoccupation For one person’s trash is another’s treasure And that futon gives her dreams Of a firm mattress for her aching back The stereo with a five-disc changer Would play her disco boogie Without ads to interrupt Yet the overalls she just hung up Would take her to an America of cornfields Where her great grandma Worked alongside the men And people grew their own food With grocery stores the last resort But her dreams lay fallow for another season

May be destiny beckons her yonder, a shore she has yet to reach, a mountain she yearns to climb,
even as a voice behind warns - one is too deep, the other way too high. This touched me deeply as I too dream...

Dip, we dreamers hold closely our dreams. I thank you from my heart for feeling deeply this expression of my dreaming. Your contemplation is one of the depth of a true poet.
In the bond of fellowship, Namaste, John

This is one of your very best, John; you have captured her plight and dreams in an empathetic way ... we had a large back yard garden growing up, it is something I miss.

Rick, thank you from my heart. I just started writing and this came up. Glad you enjoyed my friend. And growing up with my grandparents my grandpa made a huge garden I will never forget.

Susan, wonderful to hear about your recent thrift store shopping experience. I used to go to them all the time. I would hop from one to another looking for clothes and odds and ends. Sorry, not all your clothes there fit you. But glad you enjoyed my poem.

I think wanting simpler things is really a virtue. I was just going to go to a local thrift store today run by Habitat For Humanity to shop outdoor Christmas decorations for the front porch. Unfortunately they closed before I could get there. Very well written, John. Way better than things going in the landfill.

I got all my TVs at thrift stores. I spend hours looking and going from store to store to get the one I'm looking for. I have an aversion to fancy or expensive clothes and electronics. I got my computer from a hole in the wall place which recycles corporate computers. Thank you for sharing your interest in simplifying my friend. Hope you get those Christmas decorations from your local thrift store. I enjoy the work of sorting through clothes for my size. Often I find designers cloths among the racks. John

Clothes are one thing I never do in thrift stores. I am 6'6" & 325 lbs with a 14 shoe size. I mostly go to DXL or get what I have repaired at a local shop.
