I heard that Soldier say

''Why, it will pass before

we know it and I'll return to stay''


Unsure of what was going on

I leaned a little closer

He pulled a picture from his wallet

And then began to show her


For it looked like this here Soldier

His emotions held in check

Being strong for all and standing proud

With her arms around his neck



I overheard the conversation

He was having with his wife

Tears rolling down her cheeks

As she held on for dear life



''Don't leave me Ben'' I heard her say

As she tried to hide her face

Lil' Benny, Julie and Mary

Wonder why you're going away


Explain my darling to the kids

Why daddy must depart

Cause should we ever lose this war

We shall forever be apart



Tell them Daddy Loves Them

And will think of them each day

Let them know daddy will miss them

Say just pray for daddy while he's gone away
