The loneliest star is keenly seen
in my own painted night sky scene;
though dim to others, to me she glows
for I identify with what she knows.
No personal planet is hers to claim
or even a comet to blaze her name;
she wonders why this must be so ... I swear her tears, to me she shows.
Sometimes it is more than I can bear
to see her glow, knowing no one cares;
wishing I could release her sorrow
if only a spaceship, I could borrow.
Last night my special loneliest star
disappeared, leaving an enduring scar
in my heart for I know she imploded...
all hope for love having been eroded.
No longer do I gaze up at the night sky
for the fable of its glory is all a lie;
stars were never meant to shine alone
and neither was I ... her death was my own.

Rick, I love the flow and rhythm in this. It soft roll fits with the reflection of the spirit that mirrors the star on its own. It aches in increments like a sharp needle slowly breaking the skin. The close brought to mind a line from the poem by Walter de la Mare, The Listeners. "and how the silence surged softly backward,"

I appreciate knowing you love the flow and rhythm to my poem, Brian. Your praise is most poetic! It is so nice my words reminded you of such a sublime line from that classic poem, thank you

Beautiful. I was looking low in the sky to the North at 1am this morning as I was having my Friday cigar (Just one per week, ever) and I saw a star all by itself, and into my head popped "The lonely star..." I have no idea why. Then I came into the forum and read this. I think we poets tune into a similar wavelength fairly often. It's in the nature of where our art comes from.

Thank you and also for the timing of your seeing the lonely star! We poets definitely share the same wavelength, Dan.

Rick this is one of your most hauntingly beautiful creations. Your metaphor of this star all by itself is truly original and moving. I can identify with the loneliness of this star as I'm sure others can. You are a master of imaginative poetry whose words enchant.

John Your high compliments are especially appreciated as this is a personal favorite, John; thank you so very much! It is always great when readers identify with my written thoughts ... even dark or sad ones.

it is in the
pain of parting we learn the truth -
it is not the body nor the mind but something else, illusive but real
that brings the truth of our life -
love has no beginning nor an end.
