Confusion
lost, wondering why I spend one night sitting on your lap watching the fights on TV the next dodging the tip of your belt crying for you to stop late on the next night across the hall with the other kids listening as you curse while you beat up on Mom on Sunday after church you rumple my curly hair asking how I'm doing not knowing whether I should love you or hate you wondering are all families like mine

I sure hope not; an excellent portrayal of his confusion.

The confusion was mine, Rick. Thanks for the read.

Wrought in sorrow and pain, but written like a true poet. I felt your confusion. Scenes such as you paint need not be. If only every family was healthy and happy. Mine was not either.

So very sad that such confusion and heartache exists within families. Domestic abuse is such a problem today.

It's always been a sad state of affairs, one I have little trouble relating to Don.
I found my resolution after many years, I truly hope you found yours at some point.

*sigh* Will we humans ever get beyond that barbaric behavior and just learn to love?

I've known a taste of this in my own childhood, Don. Shades of grey, and people may have evil moments and still have good ones too. Life is never a simply-answered thing. Excellent write, you put me straight back in those moments.
