Confusion

lost,
wondering why
I spend one night
sitting on your lap
watching the fights on TV
the next dodging
the tip of your belt
crying for you to stop
late on the next night
across the hall
with the other kids
listening as you curse
while you beat up on Mom
on Sunday after church
you rumple my curly hair
asking how I'm doing
not knowing whether
I should love you
or hate you
wondering
are all families
like mine
