Two shoes, one black one brown Both have worn heels The right one has a hole in the toe Broken laces, knotted together At just the right length Held them securly in place He owned nothing and owed noone He slept and took his meals At a local homeless shelter He was proud to have two shoes

You have captured both the sadness of the situation and the pride of the man all in this one writing.

He is making the most of a sad situation; keeping his dignity. Excellent writing, Don.

Don, I love how you made the two shoes an image of his simplicity. I have returned to the theme of the homeless in many of my poems. But your superbly short yet poignant poem really makes for warm-hearted reading even in this man's plight.

Wonderful illustration of what the power of a willful spirit can handle.

This reminds me of a Russian tale. There was a man walking around wearing only one shoe. Someone asked him "Did you lose a shoe?" He replies with a big grin, "No I found a shoe."

Indepence and pride are good things to a point. However, as the cliche goes, "no man is an island." Great writing, Don.
