It took me a long time before I didn't check to see if I was stepping on a crack or not as I walked.

Guys, that is kind of joke that I have always labeled as mean teasing. It's a kind of teasing that does not get any laughter from me. I think anything that humiliates and hurts people (especially innocent children) is unforgivable. Anyone who gets his laughs at the expense of others will never be welcome in my circle.

Some parents do not think about the sensitivity of children.

When my son was growing up, he always asked me for the facts as he didn't trust his dad anymore. His dad would tell him horses were cows, cows were pigs, and along that sort of line while I was always quick to tell him the true names and tell him that Dad loved teasing.

You're a good Mom, Cat.
No loving parent should ever tease in such a way as to make his children look foolish in the eyes of their peers. I see such things as a part of their education and no loving parent should ever tamper with with the earliest education every child ever gets. They must begin early to give them the necessary tools to face the world ahead of them. It is difficult at best, but if we have supported and prepared them, the road to adulthood can be made a lot easier.

And the sad part is he believed that until he was a grown man and had a wife. Imagine how foolish he suddenly felt. Children have a God given RIGHT to be able to believe in the teachings of their parents.
It is one thing when a child comes to a conclusion on his own corcerning certain things. In time, the answer will become clear. It is quite another for a parent to deliberatly mislead them through thir entire childhood. That is just sad and so wrong.

I agree, it is mean to tell lies to children when they ask questions.

It is mean and unfair and in time will cause a child to be humiliated in the presence of his peers. It can lead to painful teasing and harm to an innocent child.

I never knew that until one day, when she was a teenager, I told her that she had to learn not to express her emotions on her face so much around strangers as I was worried about strangers taking advantage of her. It was then she said "You mean you can't read my mind?" When I asked what she meant, she said that she always thought I could read her mind because I always seemed to know how she was feeling and what she was thinking. Too bad for me as I had unknowingly kept her in line because she thought I would know right away if she did anything wrong, which I probably would have because she wore her feelings on her face so clearly...lol! Luckily for me, she was a good kid anyways It was after that, she started asking to go for long walks in which she told me everything that was going on in her life since our last walk. She would always end it with "But you can't get mad at me because I told you." Luckily it was just the usual teenage stuff and we could talk it out.

That's pretty wonderful, Cat, that she wanted to walk and talk about what was happening in her life.
