Humanity's Pawn
The dust collects more heavily
with every visit to this store.
In a dark corner,
values once adored
set aside forevermore.
I slowly walk up to them.
My steps echo in this tomb.
Carelessly displayed behind smudged glass
these values await their doom.
Every time here it is different.
I never know what waits for me.
I notice two more display cases
in this pawn of humanity.
The dust sits lighter on these two
as they have not been in here too long.
In both of them sit “peace” and “love.”
Such a despair to look upon.
What was slow now becoming fast
as sickness grows each day.
We set aside our values
to get ahead in life some way.

Another good one. I am not sure if this one reminds me for an antique shop or a museum, but the point is made with the last lines.

Michael, I used to shop in thrift stores constantly. Your poem took me back to those days with haunting realism. Loved reading this and where it took me.
