CAPTAIN PATCH AND THE TREASURE OF KING JERRICK III
“Captain! Captain!” Woody said softly, gently moving the Captain's shoulder, rocking him slightly as he slept.
The Captain remained motionless, gently snoring away.
“Captain!” Woody said again, raising his voice a little bit this time.
“What, for Pete's sake!” Captain Patch said irritably, sitting up in bed.
“First-mate Ricky wanted me to wake you Captain! We are coming up on land!”
“Excellent!” said Captain Patch, standing up briskly from the bed. “Soon we will find that treasure! Where is Ricky?”
“He is in quarter's at your desk looking over the map, sir.”
“Fine. Fine. Soon!” said the Captain with a smile.
The pirate ship slowly inched towards the shore of the land. The crew was excited, singing pirate songs as they quickly stepped off of the ship onto the soft, warm sand.
“Captain?” a crewman called out.
“What is it, Lucky?” Captain Patch snarled.
“If we get to the treasure.....”
“When we get to the treasure,” the Captain interrupted.
“Yes sir! When we get to the treasure, uh, what will we do about the “Invisible Swordsmen” who protect it?”
“Ha, ha!” Captain Patch laughed. “That is a silly tale Lucky!” He clapped Lucky on the back. “Nothing more.”
“Yes sir,” Lucky said, nervously glancing up at the foreboding, black clouds. They were slowly gathering together above them all.
“Let's get moving!” Captain Patch boomed and began walking.
Just then the rain began to fall.
Thunder “boomed” and lightning flashed violently as the pirates slowly made their way through the thick, green vegetation.
“Captain?” Jesse asked.
“What is it Jesse?” Captain Patch said.
“Some of the men are beginning to get tired. Maybe we should stop for a little while.”
“Are you tired, Jesse?” Captain Patch asked, swinging his sword through the thick plants.
“No sir.” Jesse replied, walking behind him.
“Well then, we keep moving!” the Captain firmly stated as he moved along. “If my woman can keep going so can the men! Besides, I want to get the treasure on the ship,” he added, looking up at the sky.
“Yes sir,” Jesse answered the Captain. Sweat trickled down her muscular body as she cut through the plants.
“I'm beat!” Tom-Tom whined.
“All right! No more complaining!” Ricky ordered the men at the back of the line. “The Captain knows what he is doing! We have been at this for hours, we should be there soon. Stay strong!”
A few moments later Captain Patch cut his sword through the last of the remaining thick vegetation. Ahead of them stood the wide, black mouth of the cave! The treasure was hidden
somewhere within!
'Where are these supposed, Invisible Swordsmen?' Captain Patch thought to himself as he eyed the entrance to the cave.
“I suppose if they were really there we would not know,” the Captain softly spoke to himself. “Arrr!”
Ricky slowly made his way up to the Captain.
“How should we handle this sir?”
“Hmm,” Captain Patch hummed, thinking. “I was considering all of us either charging to the entrance or.....”
“Uh huh,” Ricky said as he listened.
“Or going up to it in pairs of two,” the Captain finished, looking at his first-mate.
“Are you worried about these “Invisible Swordsmen” sir? I thought you told Lucky that they are only a silly superstition.”
“I am not sure but I want to be safe,” replied Captain Patch. “I was calming Lucky down. Lucky's a good lacky but he panics.”
“Yes sir,” Ricky said. “Personally I like the two-pair idea.”
“Yesss,” hissed the Captain.
“Yes sir,” Ricky went on. “We have double the chance of getting to the cave that way and once there the “Invisible Swordsmen” will not attack anymore.”
“That is true,” Jesse agreed, easing up to the two of them. “So the legend says,” she added.
“Right,” Ricky agreed with Jesse.
“Also,” Jesse added, looking at the cave. “With two you are backed up by your partner.”
Captain Patch listened to them talking as he looked at the cave entrance.
“That is the way it will be then!” he boomed.
“I do not like this!” Tom-Tom said, looking over at Lucky.
“Nor do I,” Lucky agreed. They both looked at each other, their eyes twitching nervously.
The rain was falling harder now. Much harder. It was as if nature were trying to give the pirate crew some kind of a sign about what they were going to do. They all stepped out of the remaining vegetation that was concealing them. The surface underneath them turned from a muddy dirt to a rocky surface that led up to the cave.
Ricky whispered to Captain Patch, “According to the story there is supposed to be three of them.”
The “Invisible Swordsmen” had supposedly been protectors of King Jerrick III. The “protectors” had turned on the king. Another king's wizard had offered them immortality if they did so. The wizard did not keep his word however and the “protectors” were executed by the order of the king's son, Prince William. Now their spirits remained, hoping for forgiveness by protecting the king's treasure.
Tom-Tom felt a force hit his sword, knocking it out of his hand!
“NO!” Tom-Tom screamed in fear. But nothing else happened. Then, suddenly Ricky's sword went flying through the air as well!
“What is going on here!” Captain Patch yelled out.
Next Jesse's, Woody's, Lucky's and all of the other pirates' swords were ripped from their hands. But nothing else happened.
“Well, that was no big deal!” Jesse said sarcastically to the group. She briskly walked to the opening of the cave. When she tried to enter the cave however, she was tossed back about five feet!
Woody tried to pick his sword up. When he just about had it in his hands the sword went flying through the air into the cave! Then, the rest of the pirates' swords followed as well!
“Well! Why don't you just finish us off!” yelled Ricky, looking around frantically.
Above them the sky was black. The rain was falling in sheets by this time. The thunder rumbled! The lightning flashed like a strobe light!
“I WANT MY TREASURE!” screamed Captain Patch.
He marched up to the cave entrance. He too was greeted with a toss, throwing him back on his back.
“NO ONE KNOCKS DOWN CAPTAIN PATCH AND LIVES!” he boomed.
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning came zipping down from the sky and hit a huge rock. It left a trail of electricity as it did so. The trail continued to another rock and one more after that. All the time it left a continuous trail that formed an electric circle around them all.
The pirates stood in shock. As they watched, three humanoid figures made of electricity appeared in front of them inside the circle.
“I knocked you down, Captain Patch,” one of the figures said. “But I am already dead.”
The pirates looked around at each other. Finally Captain Patch spoke.
“You are the invisible swordsmen.”
“Yes, but we prefer to be called “protectors”,” another one of the figures replied.
“Well, what were you doing?” Jesse asked.
“We were protecting the king's treasure, of course,” said the third “protector.”
“But, but you let us live?” stammered Tom-Tom.
“Yes,” the first “protector” said. “We have had enough of killing.”
“We pray for forgiveness by killing no more,” the second “protector” said.
“And by protecting King Jerrick's treasure, as we should have before,” added the third.
“And now you must leave,” the first “protector” said. “The weather continues to worsen until the threat to the treasure is gone.”
The pirates returned to their ship feeling disheartened. At the same time, they felt as if they had learned something as well. They sailed off into the horizon, over the blue waters and under a now peaceful, blue sky. Captain Patch and Ricky were in the Captain's quarters. Ricky turned from the desk to the Captain who was lying on his bunk staring up at nothing in thought.
“You know, Captain. I feel as if we found the true treasure back there.”
“Aye Ricky. Aye,” Captain Patch replied softly, still adrift in thought. “Aye.”
