i might have done this one before, i don't know, because it's an oldy
susan
coal dust in their eyes
deep into the
earth's surface they go
trying to reach
what they find below
coal dust in their eyes
never seeing
the daytime sky
these workers
of yesterday
coal dust in
their eyes
deeper and deeper
they go
into the dark caves
generation
after generation
without hesitation
coal dust in
their eyes
not long
were the lives
in teh cave
and the hives
giving more and more
coal dust in their eyes
in the day they
went down
in the dusk
they cam back
covered in soot
coal dust in their eyes
teh workers of
the deep
these images
i want to keep
the lights on
their heads
as they put
their weary bodies
to bed
coal dust in
their eyes
depe below the
surface they
would go
to keep the flow
all day and
into the night
coal dust in
their eyes
many mines are
now closed
but the memory lingers

It was a hard life for the coal miners but it was an honest and honorable way to earn a living. Some would seek to bring back the coal mining but it's glory days are coming to an end.

It is good to read your compassionate poem again, Susan ... butty to buddy is a cool thing to learn.

i thought that i should post that here
i didn't truely know where the word buddy came from until sasha pointed it out
thank you for reading again rick and your kind comments about it
this was first written about 15 or so years ago.....i was thinking about this town in nova scotia which i had sort of been to and it just came to mind...
they no longer do coal mining, but they once did

That's pretty cool to learn how the term buddy originated.
