Right Rick, and no privacy. I sure would hate to be in a rescue shelter in some kind of disaster where you are all just packed in together. Makes me shudder.

9. It varies by species, but many penguins will mate with the same member of the opposite sex season after season. ~

10. Similarly, most species are also loyal to their exact nesting site, often returning to the same rookery in which they were born.

They have good memories with all the other nesting sites all around.

11. Some species create nests for their eggs out of pebbles and loose feathers. Emperor Penguins are an exception: They incubate a single egg each breeding season on the top of their feet. Under a loose fold of skin is a featherless area with a concentration of blood vessels that keeps the egg warm. ~

you all know it's that way with all birds too about nests right? They always return to the same nests...as long as they are still there anyway

Very interesting about Emperor penguins, Foxy.
It is true they return to the same area, Mike ... where I live summer storms take out many nests they would have used the following year.

12. In some species, it is the male penguin which incubates the eggs while females leave to hunt for weeks at a time. Because of this, pudgy males— with enough fat storage to survive weeks without eating—are most desirable.

Ha, the opposite of our culture. Doves mate for life, maybe they are cousins. Two ducks big enough to be geese, used to stop by for a week for food and drink and left bright green doo doo floating in my pool. No worse then them damn dirty crows. It's a lot of work, and less fun the older I get. The only penguins I don't like, are the Pittsburgh penguins.

They have quite a healthy colony of penguins in South Africa, the other place is the Falkland islands. They are so very inquisitive too. I adore them.

13. Penguin parents—both male and female—care for their young for several months until the chicks are strong enough to hunt for food on their own.
